Who doesn’t want to look like a MMA fighter? Those athletes are some of the most chiseled people in the world. MMA is a form of fighting, the abbreviation means Mixed Martial Arts, and that is exactly what it is.

To prep for his role as a mixed martial artist in Warrior, star Joel Edgerton spent three weeks at Greg Jackson’s famed training camp in Albuquerque, NM. While he didn’t mix it up in the ring with the likes of Georges St-Pierre or Shane Carwin (both top UFC competitors and members of Jackson’s team), he did adhere to the same training routine the pros use. “You’re up at seven in the morning,” Jackson says. “You head to the gym. You’ve got your first class at 9:30. In the afternoon, there’s strength and conditioning.”

Equally important was training the mind. Edgerton had to tackle one of Jackson’s most daunting challenges—“The Hill of Tears”—a run up a steep 8,000-foot incline in the sweltering desert heat. “It was like 104°, but Joel ran it really hard,” Jackson says. “He threw up—but he ran it really hard.” Edgerton achieved his pugilist look through a combination of weight training and traditional MMA techniques. He had an athletic build when he arrived, but as the weeks passed, his body took on a leaner appearance to reflect his character’s personal fighting style.
And even though his time at Jackson’s camp was short, the actor picked up enough from their marathon training sessions to stay true to the sport on-screen. “He was a real martial artist in the sense that he was an all-around guy,” Jackson says. “He did well with the grappling, the striking, with everything, really. He was an actual mixed martial artist, which was pretty cool.”

In this latest visit with the former Olympian, “Rowdy” discusses several more topics, including Tate’s striking, and the misconceptions some may have about her ability to go into the later rounds if need be.

Deep Water

“I think it’s just dumb that she assumes that my conditioning wouldn’t be very good. I’m an Olympic athlete, and before that I was a swimmer. I’ve been an athlete since I was six years old. To assume that I would gas out is dumb, and to assume that I have horrible striking is dumb. I think the only way that she can convince herself that she has a chance is to tell herself that everything that she hasn’t seen isn’t there. I think she’s so scared of that first exchange, because I’ve gotten everybody, so far, in that first exchange. I think she’s telling herself that once she gets past that first minute, that she’s safe, but that’s totally not the case.”

Tate’s Striking

“Her striking is not the least bit impressive, at all. Just look at their attempt to show any of her highlights. One highlight shows her hitting Marloes Coenen once, and then she loses her and falls against the cage. There’s another one where she tries to kick this one chick, and the other chick throws her. She doesn’t really have any striking to speak of. From what I’ve seen, it’s not impressive. It’s much less impressive than my absent striking that people haven’t seen.”

The routines are fast paced, engaging, and are far more interesting than lifting weights or running on a treadmill alone.

Using MMA techniques in your workout can perfect almost every single part of your body. From your next down to your calves, using moves from some of the world’s most powerful and popular fighters can at least make you look like you are ready for combat.

Novices are recommended to start on a six day, 12 week program to begin their routine. Most people who do well with these types of programs are already in fairly good shape and are looking to take their form and endurance to the next level- although the routine can be beneficial to anyone, but those who don’t exercise regularly may need to start slower to avoid over exertion and injury.
