Could weight training lessen the severity of Parkinson’s?

It’s no secret that weight training is great for anyone. It keeps people leaner, healthier, and in most cases it keeps people looking and feeling younger. In a promising new report by the American Academy of Neurology, weight training is credited with helping people in a completely different aspect of their lives- it may help to reduce the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.
——
According to the American Academy of Neurology…

NEW ORLEANS – New research suggests weight training for two years significantly improves the motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease compared to other forms of exercise such as stretching and balance exercises. The clinical trial, which compared two forms of exercise for Parkinson’s disease, was released today and will be presented at the American Academy of Neurology’s 64th Annual Meeting in New Orleans April 21 to April 28, 2012.

“While we have known that many different types of exercise can benefit Parkinson’s patients over short time periods, we did not know whether exercise improves the motor symptoms of Parkinson’s over the long term,” said study author Daniel Corcos, PhD, with the University of Illinois at Chicago.

For the study, 48 people with Parkinson’s disease were randomized to progressive resistance exercise, known as weight training, or they were assigned to the exercise known as fitness counts, which includes flexibility, balance and strengthening exercises. The groups exercised for one hour, twice a week for two years.

The severity of motor symptoms, including tremors, was measured using the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) after six, 12, 18 and 24 months of exercise. Scores were taken when the participants were not taking their medication.

While both forms of exercise reduced motor symptoms at six months of exercise, participants who did weight training saw a 7.3 point improvement in their UPRDS score after two years while the fitness counts group returned to the same scores they had at the start of the study.

“Our results suggest that long-term weight training could be considered by patients and doctors as an important component in managing Parkinson’s disease,” said Corcos.

Parkinson’s is a mind and body ravishing disease; at any stage, it has a significant impact on the quality of one’s life. A new study has shown that weight training may help to improve the severity of the symptoms, and may even help to regain motor function.

The disease, Parkinson’s is a degenerative condition that launches a full blown attack on the nervous system. Cells in the midbrain die and therefore dopamine levels drop significantly. The result is slower performance that gets worse and worse as time goes by. Unfortunately, not much is known about the condition- celebrities with Parkinson’s such as Muhammad Ali and Michael J. Fox have helped to raise public awareness throughout their battle in the spotlight.

Symptoms of Parkinson’s are first seen in the motor skills- movement is slowed and people start getting tremors and shaking. When it progresses, people who suffer lose control over their limbs and are unable to walk or hold objects.
Research is now showing that people who do weight training two or more times a week actually experience alleviation in some symptoms including slowness, stiffness, and tremors. During one study, a group of patients who tried weight training alone saw a significant reduction in their symptoms as opposed to a group that tried stretching and other exercises without weight training.

The effectiveness of weight training to help with Parkinson’s disease seems to be measured on a two year timeline. Patients who are in the later stages of the disease may have difficulty holding the weights, so to get the full benefits- starting a weight training routine has the most benefits when began early on.

Experts promote all types of exercise for short term improvement, but weight training seems to be the only one with long term benefits. Other popular exercises for Parkinson’s patients include Tai Chi and Yoga.

Have you or a loved one who is suffering from Parkinson’s tried weight training to help with the symptoms? Tell us what results you saw.

Are you hiding your “man boobs” because you can’t figure out how to get rid of them? Try these tips instead!

It’s an embarrassing and somewhat common amongst males- man boobs. It is also one of the most common motivators for a guy to start a weight lifting routine. So, how exactly do you get rid of man boobs?

——-

Arjit wonders if he will lose his man boobs by doing the StrongLifts 5×5 training program since there’s only 3 exercises per workout. Quote…how to get rid of man boobs Are you hiding your man boobs because you cant figure out how to get rid of them? Try these tips instead!

Dear Mehdi,

I am eager to follow your StrongLifts 5×5 workout formula. But i have man boobs and some excess fat. If i follow only the 3 exercises of each workout, for 3 days a week only, would it be beneficial for me?? Or do i have to do some other exercises too?

-Arjit

You can’t lose your man boobs by doing a gazillion of chest exercises, just like you can’t lose your belly fat by doing endless situps, because spot reduction is a myth. Man boobs is just fat tissue covering your chest muscles and since you can’t burn fat locally, you have to lower your overall body fat to lose them.

So the good old fashioned strategies of fat loss apply: if the amount of calories you eat is lower than the amount of calories your body burns, you’ll lose fat and thus also your man boobs. Here are 2 powerful tips you can use to instantly create a caloric deficit, plus an extra third tip which I’ll explain.

1. Eat Healthier. Man boobs are almost always the result of years of eating junk food which contain more calories than whole foods. This doesn’t mean you have to stop eating junk food forever to lose your man boobs, but you will have to eat a lot healthier the majority of the time.
• More meats, chicken, fish, veggies and fruits. No need to turn into one of those paleo nazis – grains are fine if you eat them in moderation.
• Less junk, alcohol and soda. 2 beers and a burger when out with friends is fine, but a DAILY 6 pack and TV dinner is an obvious no-go.

2. Get Stronger. One, muscle size is directly related to strength gains and so by getting stronger on the Bench Press, you’ll “shape” your chest. Two, the more weight you lift, the more calories you burn in a workout. Three, strength training promotes healthier food choices and makes you stick to your diet better.
StrongLifts 5×5 is therefore plenty, even though you’ll only do 3 exercises per workout, 3x/week. The amount of exercises doesn’t matter, intensity does. As an example, check how StrongLifts Member Vlad (20y, Belgium) lost his man boobs with StrongLifts 5×5 after boosting his Squat from 20kg to 135kg.

3. Fix Your Posture. Working behind a computer all day can tighten your chest muscles and cause slouching shoulders which will then make your man boobs look worse. This is similar to how excess sitting can cause your hip muscles to tighten and your belly to look bigger as a result. If you look at SL Member Vlad’s posture, it’s clear his upper-back is straighter after doing StrongLifts 5×5.
Get used to sitting and walking with your shoulders back instead of letting them slouch all the time. Daily shoulder dislocations with a resistance band coupled with low bar Squats 3x/week will also improve your posture dramatically.
Don’t worry about gynecomastia – man boobs caused by lowered testosterone and increased estrogen from taking certain medication or steroid abuse. The overwhelming majority of guys with man boobs will NOT need antiestrogen treatment, surgery or Kramer’s “Mansierre”, but can get rid of their man boobs naturally by simply eating healthier, gaining strength and fixing their posture.

That’s a great article.  The best program that is out for how to lose man boobs is by the Chest Coach. You can check his program out here ==> Lose Man Boobs Quickly and Naturally

Check out this video.

Commonly called “man boobs” a condition called gynecomastia, causes males to have unusually large mammary glands that cause breast enlargement. The condition can occur in men at any age and weight. Younger guys suffer a lot more distress over the condition due to social pressures and body image. Typically, people who have this condition do not develop man boobs from being obese; they just have lowered testosterone and increased estrogen. This may be as a result of taking certain medications, drug abuse, and hormonal changes during puberty. In some cases, the condition may correct itself, and the male breasts will shrink down within a year or two.

Another condition leading to a man having woman like breasts is obesity. Increased body fat all over causes the breast area to become fatty and saggy. Regardless of what causes it, man boobs are embarrassing and many guys aren’t taking the correct measures to reduce them in size, and appearance.

If your issue is weight related, then no amount of chest exercises is going to make a difference. Just like how doing a thousand sit-ups a day isn’t going to give you a six pack if pounds and layers of fat are built up in your stomach. Spot reduction is not possible, especially if you don’t drop the weight first.

So first thing’s first, if you have man boobs as a result of obesity, you have to change your lifestyle if you want to reduce the fat in your chest area. Start with the basics, eating healthy, reducing caloric intake, and starting a cardio exercise plan. Choose foods high in protein and low in fat to burn the lbs. without losing any more muscle. Reduce sugar intake, alcohol consumption, and opt for fresh fruits and vegetables to really accelerate weight loss.
Another change is to start a weight training program to build strength. Once you start to lose those lbs., you’ll replace flabby fat with tight chest muscles. Building muscles will also strengthen your frame and enable you to have better posture- and oh yeah, by the way, you need to stand up straight to beat the dropping chest look. Shoulders back, head up, and no more slouching behind your computer screen at work!

Do you suffer from enlarged breasts? Have you worked on any chest reducing plans?

Looking to build long sleek muscles? Think yoga instead of weights!

When many people think of yoga, they think of it as a stretching exercise. Those who have never tried it, probably aren’t exactly sure what it is. More women than men have traditionally practiced yoga, but a few buff celebrity males are using it to build muscle.  It really got me thinking when I saw the Yoga for Bodybuilding program.

———-

There is an allusive stereotype surrounding yoga. To most, yoga is thought of as constantly stretching and stereotyped as a flimsy workout out. Yoga is popular among matthew mcconaughey yoga 300x300 Looking to build long sleek muscles? Think yoga instead of weights! women, but men are hesitant to take a yoga class.
Jill Lawson, DietsInReview.com’s yoga expert, offers her take on why men avoid yoga. “One of the biggest reasons is the belief that they are not flexible enough to do yoga. I have heard men tell me they would try it, but they can’t touch their toes.”

Yoga is more than being able to reach your toes. Practicing yoga can benefit individuals in ways they would never imagine. At yoga classes you tend to see more women than men, but yogi men aren’t kidding around when it comes to their own practice. All yoga studios encourage men to give it a try. If the benefits aren’t selling men, maybe seeing male celebrities deeply committed will.

Adam Levine

When he isn’t hitting high notes with Maroon 5 or judging fresh-faced artists on The Voice, Adam Levine practices yoga routinely. In the beginning of his career the singer didn’t practice yoga because of the stereotypes surrounding yoga. After years of pain from weights at the gym, Adam took a yoga class. He noticed the difference with his body and hasn’t stepped foot in a gym since. His godly physique is quite impressive. We say, keep on practicing, Adam, because from the looks of it yoga is doing your body well!

Matthew McConaughey

Don’t let his Southern draw fool you, Matthew McConaughey is a beach dweller with a killer yoga practice. When he isn’t in a yoga studio, beach occupants can catch the Texan vigorously stretching with or without a shirt on. His yoga practice is a prime reason why he looks great without a shirt on. A regular yoga practice helps keep body fat low and contributes to a lean, muscular body.

Ashton Kutcher

Bikram yoga is the preferred style of Ashton Kutcher. His workout routine is supposedly to help him if an apocalypse were to happen. He started taking yoga classes with his former wife Demi Moore and maintains it today as an eligible bachelor. To challenge himself, Ashton pretends he in the desert without water. The discipline should help if the Mayans’ predictions are right.

David Beckham

Props to David Beckham who not only runs around on a soccer field for an hour and 30 minutes per match, but practices Bikram yoga off the field. The British athlete fell in love with yoga after a one-on-one session with Bikram Choudhury. David’s body and soccer skills benefits from the practice that he instantly fell in love. It’s a love that he shares with his equally hot wife, Victoria Beckham, as the power couple is known to engage in couple’s yoga together.

Robert Downey, Jr.

If it were the 1990s you wouldn’t catch Robert Downey Jr. in a yoga studio, but now the actor does yoga consistently. Photos of Robert have surfaced of him near his trailer on movie sets practicing yoga, which has taught him how to be fit, mellow, and balanced. The yogi star is now living a spiritual lifestyle, quite a contrast to the Robert of the 90s.

Practicing yoga can benefit men and women in many ways, however, there do exist differences for the two genders. “Men typically are more muscle bound than women. Tight muscles weaken over time, no matter how big and dense they appear to be. Add elasticity (not more muscle) to an already muscle clad physique and you have a formula for a very strong body,” Jill explained. Muscles that have elasticity build a strong body, thus explaining the physique on male and female yogis.

Jill says another perk for men is that yoga helps them connect with their emotions and make it easier to express themselves.

The last perk that Jill mentions is sexual pleasure, which yoga can help increase for both men and women. Yoga helps men heighten their levels of stamina and performance in the bedroom therefore increasing a woman’s sexual pleasure.

So you think yoga is for feathery, frail types? Think again! Yoga is not the practice or chanting, mystical gurus, and sitting on the floor. Many male celebrities with famously muscular bodies are huge proponents of yoga- and for good reason.

Although this workout has suddenly become popular, it has been in practice for over 5,000 years, and is one of the oldest workouts. Yoga offers the exerciser a lot more than one may initially realize, especially someone who has never actually tried it out. Most believe that it is all about increasing flexibility and meditating, but that’s not exactly the extent of it.

While participating in a Yoga workout, you are developing endurance, strength, balance, performance, and focus. It works every joint and muscle throughout your body to improve overall function and appearance. Yoga works to prevent injury and can even speed muscle recovery after a strenuous workout. While muscles are lengthened and relaxed during yoga, blood has more room to flow- in turn helping oxygen reach the muscles promoting growth and strength. Yoga also teaches your muscles how to work more effectively, meaning the movements you make will count more.

Yoga is also a more well-rounded approach to sculpting your body than just weight lifting alone. When a person lifts weights, they are isolating an area or muscle group, yoga promotes all over toning. This exercise also relies on eccentric contraction- where the muscle stretches as it contracts- this gives your muscles that elongated and sleek look while increasing flexibility. Weight training relies on the opposite principles and makes the muscle become smaller as it contracts. Without the right amount of stretching, the muscle fibers bulk up and get that bulging body builder look.

Another added perk is that people who practice yoga claim to have a better time in the sack. They claim that yoga increases stamina, endurance, and sexual flexibility. Maybe that’s the real reason Hollywood’s leading men sought out yoga- then they just stayed for the sleek muscles!

Fitness trainer gains and loses 70 pounds – How To Do It Right

As you may have seen in the news, there is a fitness trainer Drew Manning who gained 70 pounds of fat and then lost it all just to prove a point and to learn what his client’s struggle with day to day.  Well obviously there’s a right way and a wrong way to do this.

See below the story about it from cnn.com and then see after of what I would have done.

120604064701 drew manning fit2fat2fit story top Fitness trainer gains and loses 70 pounds How To Do It Right Photo source: Drew Manning as seen on cnn.com

Drew Manning thought he had the body of the ideal man: 6 feet 2 inches of tanned musculature, sculpted arms and washboard abs that narrowed to a firm, 34-inch waist.
His perfectly chiseled body was hairless due to regular “manscaping.” People assumed he worked out three hours a day, seven days a week, but the 31-year-old personal trainer said nutrition was really the key to his dream body. As for working out, he indulged in his favorite activity for only about 45 minutes a day, four to five days a week.
Then, Manning’s once impressive muscles softened to pounds of bloated fat — on purpose.

Manning, a personal trainer, decided to gain nearly 70 pounds so he could better understand how his clients feel. He then planned to lose the weight to show that no matter the numbers they faced, others could get fit, too. He called it his “Fit 2 Fat 2 Fit” campaign, and documented it on a blog, and a book that debuts in June.

He expected some physical discomfort, but the emotional struggle — and judgment from others — surprised him. As he loaded sugary cereals and soft drinks from his cart at the local grocery store one day, he caught three women staring at him, then sliding their eyes to the food he was buying.

“‘I’m doing this as an experiment! I used to be a fit guy, not the fat guy,'” Manning wanted to turn around and explain. “I’m a lot more self-conscious now. There was a total lack of confidence in the way I felt in public because I wasn’t the fit guy anymore.”

The female form has long been the topic of discussions about self-esteem, but what about men? Their ideas about weight, body image and self-esteem have been largely swept under the ambiguous rug of masculinity. Meanwhile, changing standards about the ideal male form can leave them overwhelmed and exhausted by the chase for perfection, too.

Men don’t talk about it as much, health experts say, but that doesn’t mean they’re not thinking about it, whether they’re ultra-fit or kind of fat.
“Men are still taught as boys that the body is something that is designed to be a perfectly performing machine, not something to be cared for and nurtured,” said Michael Addis, professor of psychology at Clark University and author of “Invisible Men.” “But men base self-esteem on body image and weight.”

The new physical ideal
Lately, big and bulky has been pushed to the wayside, and the swimmer’s physique reigns supreme, editors of men’s magazines and websites say. The male silhouette landing on magazine covers and action flicks is tall, lean, agile and fit.

Ideal "Hollywood" Look

It’s a physique that’s more attainable for most men than the beefy-torso-and-chicken-leg look of the past.
“Our readers want the concept that this body is natural,” said Toland. “A body that is inspired by nature, rather than machine, supplement or wealth to be able to buy you that body.”

“Our ideal male wants to look like he is healthy and confident, but not perfectly coiffed or manicured,” said Sandra Nygaard, senior fashion and grooming editor of Men’s Health. “He wants to look well-maintained.

“That’s the real ideal: They want to look great, but they don’t want to look like they spend too much time on it — but they know they need to spend time on it.”

Nygaard points to actor Ryan Reynolds as an example of making the effortless look like an art form — always the right amount of scruff and perfectly tousled hair, even if they use a beard trimmer to shave down scruff and pomade for the slept-in look.

Actors like Ryan Gosling, Zac Efron and Justin Timberlake are constantly seen sporting tailored suits. Rather than the clothes themselves, it is the fit that displays the effort they put into their appearance, and this is showing up in the workplace as well.

This is the result of what some call the “‘Mad Men’ revival” — the return of pomade, polish and of the perfectly cut suit. It stays within the boundaries of masculinity while offering men the option of looking their best.

“Men are seeing grooming not as an extra, but an essential,” Nygaard said.

Current trends might make topics like health and grooming more approachable for men while promoting a healthier ideal, but psychologists Mahalik and Addis don’t expect body image to become a big topic among guys.

Source

Lots of fitness guys recommend for skinny guys or fit guys that want to get bigger should bulk up by eating anything they can (including junk food) and then cut (bulk and cut).  Well Ryan’s experiment is a good lesson of why one should not do that.  Over an extended period of time, the yo-yoing of your weight gets harder and harder on your body.  Also, not mentioned in this article are the health side effects he suffered.  His blood pressure and cholesterol shot up with such a dramatic weight gain.

For those who are overweight like Drew got to, I highly recommend the obvious.  Workout and diet.  Not just any workouts or diet though.  Doing High Intensity Interval training so that your body has to “think” and adapt.  Boosting metabolism and doing strength training 3 times a week.  Wash away fat by drinking a lot of water.  There’s a ton of tips I can go on and on about but my Dr buddy of mine put together some killer fat loss tips in a video.  Click Here to see the Fat Loss Factors.

But if you’re looking for a leaner look… as mentioned in the article above, the big, bulky look is out.  Everyone wants to have the lean Hollywood look like Ryan Gosling.  If you’re into this type of look, my buddy Rusty Moore has a program Visual Impact Muscle Building For Men. It’s the only course out there that’s dedicated to helping you build a sleek GQ Hollywood body like Ryan Gosling.

If you really think it’s necessary to bulk and cut then one needs to learn how to do it properly and not do it often.  The best programs that teaches one how is 21 Day Fast Mass Building program.

Want to look like your favorite MMA star? Consider the MMA workout to get a fighter’s body!

Who doesn’t want to look like a MMA fighter? Those athletes are some of the most chiseled people in the world. MMA is a form of fighting, the abbreviation means Mixed Martial Arts, and that is exactly what it is.

To prep for his role as a mixed martial artist in Warrior, star Joel Edgerton spent three weeks at Greg Jackson’s famed training camp in Albuquerque, NM. While he didn’t mix it up in the ring with the likes of Georges St-Pierre or Shane Carwin (both top UFC competitors and members of Jackson’s team), he did adhere to the same training routine the pros use. “You’re up at seven in the morning,” Jackson says. “You head to the gym. You’ve got your first class at 9:30. In the afternoon, there’s strength and conditioning.”

Equally important was training the mind. Edgerton had to tackle one of Jackson’s most daunting challenges—“The Hill of Tears”—a run up a steep 8,000-foot incline in the sweltering desert heat. “It was like 104°, but Joel ran it really hard,” Jackson says. “He threw up—but he ran it really hard.” Edgerton achieved his pugilist look through a combination of weight training and traditional MMA techniques. He had an athletic build when he arrived, but as the weeks passed, his body took on a leaner appearance to reflect his character’s personal fighting style.
And even though his time at Jackson’s camp was short, the actor picked up enough from their marathon training sessions to stay true to the sport on-screen. “He was a real martial artist in the sense that he was an all-around guy,” Jackson says. “He did well with the grappling, the striking, with everything, really. He was an actual mixed martial artist, which was pretty cool.”

4214663666 1d8800105c m Want to look like your favorite MMA star? Consider the MMA workout to get a fighter’s body!

Think MMA workouts are just for the guys? Think again! There are many very strong and powerful women who participate in this sport both professionally and as a part of their workout routine.

As we wind down this frenetic week of anticipation for arguably the biggest fight in WMMA history, Ronda Rousey is taking a load off and catching some much needed rest. Despite being run down from days that start at 5 a.m. and end well past the hours of normalcy, she is still generous with her time, and graciously granted CagePotato.com another interview, among a seemingly unending stream of Q&A requests ahead of her first MMA title bout Saturday night. The focal point is always the same from one interview to the next: Miesha Tate.

In this latest visit with the former Olympian, “Rowdy” discusses several more topics, including Tate’s striking, and the misconceptions some may have about her ability to go into the later rounds if need be.

Deep Water

“I think it’s just dumb that she assumes that my conditioning wouldn’t be very good. I’m an Olympic athlete, and before that I was a swimmer. I’ve been an athlete since I was six years old. To assume that I would gas out is dumb, and to assume that I have horrible striking is dumb. I think the only way that she can convince herself that she has a chance is to tell herself that everything that she hasn’t seen isn’t there. I think she’s so scared of that first exchange, because I’ve gotten everybody, so far, in that first exchange. I think she’s telling herself that once she gets past that first minute, that she’s safe, but that’s totally not the case.”

Tate’s Striking

“Her striking is not the least bit impressive, at all. Just look at their attempt to show any of her highlights. One highlight shows her hitting Marloes Coenen once, and then she loses her and falls against the cage. There’s another one where she tries to kick this one chick, and the other chick throws her. She doesn’t really have any striking to speak of. From what I’ve seen, it’s not impressive. It’s much less impressive than my absent striking that people haven’t seen.”

striking, grabbling, and allows both standing and on the ground combat. MMA is a combination of boxing, wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, kickboxing, Tae Kwon Do, American Karate, and Judo- needless to say, it is a very physically intensive practice.

Anyone who is looking to get into shape and take their routine to the next level will see results from MMA training. Even someone who has never trained in any sort of martial arts can pick up on the MMA workout routine with ease. The routines are fast paced, engaging, and are far more interesting than lifting weights or running on a treadmill alone.

Using MMA techniques in your workout can perfect almost every single part of your body. From your next down to your calves, using moves from some of the world’s most powerful and popular fighters can at least make you look like you are ready for combat.

Novices are recommended to start on a six day, 12 week program to begin their routine. Most people who do well with these types of programs are already in fairly good shape and are looking to take their form and endurance to the next level- although the routine can be beneficial to anyone, but those who don’t exercise regularly may need to start slower to avoid over exertion and injury.
